As information becomes a free commodity with a very short shelf life, schools will be places for teaching values, building networks, and fostering engagement. The "content" will be a distant 5th on the value proposition.
A college needs to be a blend of top down and bottom up organization. (Bottom up, while very real world and idealistic, does not suffice for the majority - see pre-frontal, train surfing, and yes there is friction here with the "no-hierarchy" above.)

Control of tools, information, and organization exists on a continuum and the pendulum needs to swing towards the students. (In fact, it is swinging that way because the students have the tools. Schools need to work with this fact.)
The school, like the parents, must prepare the students to handle ambiguity, chaos, and increasing amounts of responsibility. It's a tricky balance. That's life.

"Find Your People" is the slogan for Red Rover 1.0.
Getting connected is the hope and promise of college orientation. Getting connected socially - feeling like you are not alone - is a first and very important step to college success. Research supports this assertion. Red Rover is orientation software.

As an adult, imagine moving to a new city, say New York. You would want to make friends. Work would be a start, and then you want to branch out. You would want to "meet your people". If you could go to a site that showed you where your people hung out, what clubs, restaurants, bookstores, bars, etc. this would be really useful and you would probably go give a few of these a try. If, instead, the website gave you 15 names out of the phone book that matched you, you might be a little intimidated to make a move.

No. The features you have now will always be free including all upgrades. New features in the future may have associated fees, but you will always be able to choose whether to use the new features or not.

howforfreeHow can you offer the software for free?
We believe that Red Rover will be sustainable in the long run through paid feature extensions. Swift Kick also applied for grants to support the free version of the software and are pledging to make the core code open source and free forever.

“We just spent a ton of money on “x,” won't this compete with our current initiative?”
A: Red Rover is a limited feature tool that does one thing our current systems do not do: it provides a platform for custom group recommendations and joining, embedded into Facebook. Once students have expressed interest in the group, we can encourage our student leaders to use whatever our primary system is to organize their groups.

the future without currently competing or costing anything.- think of it as diversifying your portfolio.
“What liability will the school have for how the students use this system?”
A: While it’s impossible to achieve zero liability, there is no reason using Red Rover would increase the liability of the school. The system is managed by a third party, just like Facebook, and the students are simply connected in the school’s network. Not unlike meeting in the main quad. The students are notified of the public nature of the system and they are free to choose their level of interest description. The Communications Decency Act provides immunity for website operators who run forums or facilitate connections, and this was held up in the 2003 ruling concerning match.com et. al. This protection is a foundational legal tenet that allows the internet to function.
